Front End Software Engineer

Essential Experience


  • Familiarity of HTML syntax for multiple specifications, including HTML 5.
  • Knowledge of the semantic meaning of all HTML elements.
  • Knowledge at the level to be able to hand-code markup.


  • Experience of responsive design; specifying different CSS for various media devices and displays etc
  • Advanced knowledge of CSS selectors and properties, including CSS3
  • Experience with a CSS pre-processor such as SASS or LESS.
  • Ability to create reusable, modular CSS components.
  • Knowledge of properties and attributes to affect display on different browsers and devices


  • Proficent in JavaScript, including OO methodologies.
  • Experience with AJAX methodologies and techniques
  • Experience with one or more JavaScript libraries and frameworks (BackboneJS, EmberJS, AngularJS, React etc)

Non-technology specific

  • Being able to work in a team
  • Methods to ensure browser & device compatibility
  • Methods to ensure accessibility
  • Knowledge of client-side optimisation technique

Desirable Skills/Qualifications


  • Experience with Ruby on Rails.


  • Experience with Javascript testing frameworks, such as Jasmine, Jest, etc


  • Experience with BEM

Agile Methodologies

  • Understand the agile iterative software development lifecycle
  • Understand XP and agile methods such as Scrum and Kanban
  • Experience of Test Driven Development

  • Experience of iterative, rapid prototyping and user testing
