Senior Frontend Software Engineer

Our company and engineering vision

Our vision is to be Europe"s leading online retailer of beach holidays. We’re completely focused on making it easy for people to find, book and enjoy their perfect beach holiday. To reach our goals, we work as a team to a clearly defined set of values; these are what make On the Beach a great place to work for our colleagues and help us deliver the best experience possible for our customers. We’re bold. We’re open. We’re dynamic.

We promote happiness at the core of everything we do. Happy engineers and customers are the vehicle to our success. We are evolving to a brand-agnostic, domain-based, decoupled architecture. To help us get there, we encourage our teams to share knowledge and abstract complexity in order to move towards a more Continuous Delivery DevOps environment. We own our products in collaborative cross functional teams, embrace an agile mindset and use data to inform our decisions in all that we do.

The future of our frontend

We are currently transitioning from our legacy monolithic Ruby-on-Rails application, which has grown to support six branded websites. Over the past year we’ve been developing a new microclient frontend architecture using Next.js, to replace a hybrid of Rails, React and Backbone. To support this, we’ve worked closely with our UX team, to create a new shared component library using React and Storybook. Our new microclients are built on a Node.js platform running in Kubernetes powered by a CI/CD pipeline. Our goal is to create a scalable frontend architecture to rapidly create new brands and websites.

 The role

As one of our senior engineers, you’ll be expected to mentor and help grow our other engineers. Our senior engineers play a key role in shaping the technical direction of their teams and the wider engineering department. As a senior engineer, you’ll be the voice within the team for software craftsmanship. You’ll also have a natural ability to clearly communicate technical detail to a non-technical audience.

We’re evangelists of agile values and principles but each team is responsible for their own way of working. As a senior engineer you’ll help drive the teams’ processes forward by promoting continuous improvement. We deploy multiple times a day and are working towards a continuous delivery pipeline.

We offer a salary between £45,000 and £60,000 alongside a great benefits package including;

  • Generous discount on holidays
  • Flexible working hours
  • Friday afternoon R&D & annual hack week
  • Simplyhealth Optimise Health Plan and eye care contribution
